Kannur airport project works gaining momentum

The groundwork for the proposed Kannur airport has begun gaining momentum with the Kerala Government announcing that acquisition of the 1,200 acres notified for the project would be completed by December.

The project, expected to provide the much-needed fillip to all-round growth of the economically backward north Malabar region of Kerala is proposed to be developed on a build, operate and own basis.

Having acquired 200 acres, survey works for procuring 1,000 acres on a fast-track basis for the project near Mattannur here has begun and the process is expected to be completed by December end, the State Home and Tourism Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishn an, said.

The Kerala State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation, the nodal agency for land acquisition, has been entrusted with the job of mopping up Rs 250 crore to pay compensation to the land holders by December, the Minister, who is also the Chair man of the Kannur Airport Action Committee, said at a review meeting here recently.
